On Leaving Moniepoint

Today is my last day as a software engineer at Moniepoint.

It’s been 10 years since I started my career at this great company. 10 years of blood, sweat, tears, and triumph. What a journey it has been!!

We started this company from nothing, and today Moniepoint is a unicorn, supporting millions of people and businesses across Nigeria and overseas.

I will never forget how we started. Barely a dozen of us. Me and the guys writing code in Tosin’s apartment in 1004, Victoria Island. Cracking jokes, throwing banter while working late into the night.

I was just a kid, barely 20 years old, fresh out of school. All I had going for me was that I was obsessed with building great stuff.

Since then, I have worked on payments infrastructure, business management tools, settlement, reconciliation, monnify virtual accounts, loans (credit), fraud detection, the list goes on. Man, I’ve done some cool shit.

I have learned a ton. I have grown immensely. I have made lifelong friends. I will always be grateful for the experiences and the opportunity to have worked with such brilliant people.

I have also experienced financial happiness. The same financial happiness that our business owners and customers enjoy. We stayed true to the mission we were sold from the beginning.

Moniepoint is poised to conquer the world. I know this because I know the CEO, Tosin Eniolorunda. He holds core values that are reflected in the entire essence of the company: Integrity, Candor, Grit, Technical depth, and Empathy. Great companies are great because they are a reflection of the founder’s convictions, obsessions, and core values. The founder is operating from a near-spiritual sense of purpose. It’s why I have no doubt Moniepoint will continue to succeed, because the company is driven by purpose.

My Future Plans

Over the next years of my life, I will devote myself to exploring my interests, pursuing my curiosity, and just living my best life. This is a resignation from paid employment, but not from ambition and purpose. I will continue to do everything I can to support my fellow humans with whatever resources the universe has blessed me with.

I will be working on technology that enables Decentralized Intelligence: a symbiotic network of humans and machines collaborating in a peer-to-peer, permissionless, trustless web. By leveraging modern cryptography with sustainable incentive design, we can unlock the value trapped in private, proprietary data while safeguarding privacy and Intellectual Property. This is where I’ll be focusing a lot of my energy in the coming decades. There is so much to build, and we are just getting started. Whatever happens, I’m sure the journey will be fun. I dive into more details in this link.

End of an era

Recently, I took some time to visit some old pictures. Just to remind myself of the friends I made over the years.

This was at Tosin’s wedding.

L-R:

Solomon Amadi – VP, Payments
Adrian Agho – VP, User Experience
My humble self
Awal Elegbede – VP, Fraud
Emeka Ibe – VP, Customer Support Tools

With Adrian Agho. Adrian has always been like a brother to me.

With Felix Ike, our CTO. Felix was a true leader for those of us who were less experienced at the time.

Some of the early folks at TeamApt.

L-R

Chinaza Nduka-dike: TeamApt’s first lady. Literally the first woman we hired. Today, she’s our VP of People Operations
Dennis Ajalie: CEO of TeamApt, our switching infrastructure. Also, my guy for life.
Samuel Idehen: Worked with me on Moneytor. Ideas from the Moneytor project later supported our business banking platform, Moniepoint.
Solomon Amadi: Worked on Teamapt’s payments infrastructure and switching.
Sanmi Akinrele: Trusty Product Manager who also worked on Moneytor.

Oloruntoba Ojo: He and I did early work in our core banking system, alongside some other engineers. All round great guy. Today, Toba is our VP of Core Banking.

Sulaiman Adeeyo: Great engineer. We called him White Panther. Don’t ask why.

Myself with Joey. Joseph Benson joined us when we needed leadership in Product design and UX. My guy from time.

And tons of other friends: Didi Uwemakpan, Deborah Igwedike, J. Babs, Chidum, Tobi Amira, Glory Mpamah, Nicolas Taljaard, Taimur Hassan, the list is really long and endless..lol.

And of course, our co-founders. Felix Ike, CTO. Tosin Eniolorunda, CEO and CNIC (Chief Nigga In Charge). I am forever grateful to have crossed paths with you guys. I will continue rooting for Moniepoint to succeed. Thank you for leading us.

Moniepoint is a great place to work. For anyone who loves to build and make products that have a direct impact on the lives of millions, that is the place to be…

Leaving is not easy. When you’ve poured your heart into something, it becomes more than just work; it becomes a part of who you are. But growth often means letting go, stepping out, and trusting the road ahead. Life, like code, is versioned. We push changes, refactor old scripts, and commit to new beginnings. The beauty is in the unfolding, line by line, step by step.

And as we move on in this journey of life, who knows what the future holds? No one, and that’s the beauty. We get to decide and shape it however we want.

Like we always say, it’s still Day 1.
